Welcome to 2014!
Happy New Year Koh Phangan party people! 2013 turned out to be a great year for partying in Koh Phangan and 2014 is sure to prove as good, if not better.
The main thing is that the New Year party in Haad Rin for 2013/2014 passed off without incident. The last one was marred by the tragic death of Stephen Ashton who got caught in the crossfire between rival gangs while sitting at a bar. It was important for the island to show that last year was an isolated incident and that security at the biggest party of the year is up to scratch.
2013 saw a proliferation of bars holding dance music event nights. Party goers to Haad Rin and Baan Tai now have a better choice than ever when it comes to raving. There is the Ku Bar, Merkaba as well as Loi Lai Floating Bar holding well-attended events.
At the same time the after party scene at Baan Sabaii and Backyard continue to go from strength to strength, with many people opting to skip the main event and head straight for the more ‘underground’ after events.
As well The FMP, Half Moon Party, Black Moon Party, Shiva Family and Jungle Experience parties doing great business other events are also proving enduring and popular such as Blue and Green Sramanora Waterfall Party and Rhythm and Sands.
It doesn’t look like Koh Phangan has reached saturation point with its parties. The only grey cloud on the horizon is the on-going political problems in Bangkok which have reduced tourist numbers to the country and looks set to continue to disrupt the flow of tourists. Although it should be mentioned that Koh Phangan hasn’t experienced any protests.
Hopefully 2014 will see a peaceful resolution to the problems in the Thai polity and that Koh Phangan can welcome record numbers of party folk ready to show that music speaks louder than political slogans.
