Live Music Venue
One of the best places outside of Ban Tai and Haad Rin to get a drink and enjoy a bit of nightlife is the fishing village of Chaloklum in the north of Koh Phangan. It is an area that is easily accessed from a good road that starts at the main town of Thongsala. Chaloklum has become the home of a nascent live music scene that is centered round the Omega Bar.
Chaloklum is an intriguing mix of backpackers resorts, boutique hotels, old Chinese architecture and fishermen tending to their nets. It is an important transport hub as you can catch boats from Chaloklum to Bottle Beach and Thong Nai Pan. From Chaloklum is the path to Haad Khom that is popular with long stay visitors to Koh Phangan.
Omega Bar is opposite the stylish Sheesha Bar that serves Asian and Western cuisine and has sheesha pipes to try. Every Wednesday the Omega holds an ‘Art Music’ event. During the day volunteers organize art and crafts activities open to all the children in the area. It is free. At night the bar hosts a jam session.
It is an open mic session that is open for all to join. They have sound equipment and some instruments. Most sessions there are some of Koh Phangan’s better known musicians to be found jamming with people who have come to Chaloklum for a beach holiday. The event usually features guitars (electric and acoustic) drums and percussion. Sometimes the music takes on a free form jazz style, other times blues. It really does depend on who turns up the gig.
The Wednesday jam sessions at Omega Bar are fairly well attended. It is a relaxed and appreciative audience that harps back to the old hippy days in Koh Phangan before psy-trance DJs took over. Incidentally there is a psy-trance outdoor party near Chaloklum called the Paradise Waterfall Party.
