Party supposedly Kiwi style

Rhythm and Sands

Bantai has a new party. It’s Rhythm and Sands Festival. This party is inspired by New Zealand’s biggest party. It has just started, and the official blurb claims it is going to be bigger and better than the other parties in Bantai.

The party is so new they haven’t even made their website yet. Well, I guess the organizers are too busy partying on Koh Phangan.

The idea is to take the format of New Zealand’s famous New Year’s party and transfer it to the Thai party central of Koh Phangan.

That means DJ music, body painting, fire dancing and several hours of party mayhem. The idea is to attract big name DJs rather than rely on Pete Phangan, DJ A, DJ Ton and the rest of the resident Thais and foreigners who provide the CD and computer mixing for the other parties on the island.

The first party was on 1st August 2012 and featured a local band, local DJs and 2 big name DJs one of which was Micky Finn. It was held at Holiday Beach Resort on Bantai Beach. Tickets cost 500 Thai Baht.

The event was held on 3 stages and included an open mic spot.

The organizers hope to make the event monthly – kicking off 2 nights before the Full Moon Party. They also promise to make the party more secure and to provide better accommodation, and safe and reasonably priced taxis.

All these claims need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Firstly, Brandon Block played at the first event. He is hardly a new act! Secondly, it is hard to see how any foreigner can control taxi prices or resort prices.

Still from the Facebook pictures Rhythm and Sands looks like fun. It is fun, however, in a way that is probably very similar to all the other parties on Koh Phangan rather than having any particular stand out Kiwi flavor.
